The natural wonders of Costa Rica will be on display as we head to the beautiful Rio Perdido Hotel & Thermal River. It is situated at the foot of Miravalles, a lesser known volcano, but one that is still full of magic and mystery. Reaching a height of 6,654 ft (2028m), Miravalles is an andesitic stratovolcano, created by a succession of dramatic eruptions over a million years ago.

Our day begins when your chauffeur and bilingual certified tour guide pick you up at your lodgings at 6:00am. We will drive in a spacious and comfortable vehicle for about an hour before stopping for breakfast at a buffet style restaurant serving typical Costa Rican cuisine and pastries as well as fresh fruits and coffee. Then we will continue our drive for just over an hour, during which your guide will share information about your day and the beautiful region you will be visiting.

Our destination is the Rio Perdido Hotel & Thermal River. Rio Perdido was designed to exist in harmony with its surroundings and precious resources. Here we will explore hiking trails in this incredible intact “dwarf forest” ecosystem. A dwarf forest features miniature trees and small animals such as rodents and lizards. These forests are found across tropical highlands in Central America.

The thermal river and hot springs are situated on a 600-acre private volcanic canyon reserve. Formed over thousands of years, the geothermal waters from the volcano have forged a 160 foot deep gorge throughout the property. Rio Perdido (lost river) is a mile long and is home to many pools of varying temperatures, perfect for soaking. It is a natural wonder brimming with lush, tropical flora and fauna. For a birds eye view, we will take an exciting zipline course through the Rio Blanco canyon. It is made up of 5 cables, 15 platforms built into the canyon walls, a pendulum cable, a 50 foot Tarzan swing, a 90 foot challenge bridge, and 4 “via ferratas.” A via ferrata is an Italian phrase that translates as “iron path” in English. It refers to permanently fixed ladders, metal rungs and safety wire to aid in passage along the canyon walls. Guides will be assisting along the way.

Next, we will plunge into the river’s ecosystem in the white water tubing activity. You can float and enjoy the passing wildlife. You might spot the elusive sphiggurus, a medium-sized arboreal porcupine, birds such as trogons and tiger herons, howler and white-faced capuchin monkeys, bats, and members of the big cat family. There are several hundred yards of slides and rapids peppered in between calmer waters. This will leave you refreshed and hungry for a gourmet lunch of reinvented Costa Rican classics at Rio Perdido’s signature restaurant situated amidst the treetops. After lunch you will have the rest of the afternoon to enjoy the pools and hiking trails. We will have you safely back at your lodgings between 6 and 7pm.
